Maldives Baa Atoll: The Complete Resort Guide

Everything you need to know about Baa Atoll: the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Hanifaru Bay, and the best resorts to base yourself for the Maldives' greatest marine encounters.

Baa Atoll is, for many serious Maldives travellers, the answer to a very specific question: where in the Maldives are the manta rays? The answer is Hanifaru Bay, a small bay within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where from approximately June to November each year, hundreds of manta rays gather to feed on the plankton-rich waters created by the southwest monsoon. On the right day, with the right tidal conditions and plankton density, the aggregation is one of the great wildlife spectacles on earth. But Baa Atoll is more than Hanifaru Bay. It contains some of the finest resorts in the Maldives, exceptional house reefs that rival any in the country, and a broader marine environment that earns its UNESCO designation on merit. Understanding Hanifaru Bay Hanifaru Bay is a marine protected area within the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve. Snorkelling is permitted within the bay but diving is restricted. Numbers are managed, visitors must be in the water with a certified guide and must follow the rules of the site. The experience, when conditions align, is unlike anything else in the ocean. Hundreds of manta rays, wingspans up to five metres, feed in tight formation in water shallow enough to see clearly. Whale sharks are occasionally present simultaneously. The most reliable months are July to October. June and November are possible but less consistent. The bay requires flat calm, the right tidal conditions, and plankton in the water, none of which can be guaranteed on any specific day. All Baa Atoll resorts offer Hanifaru Bay excursions during the season. The difference between resorts is how close they are, the closest being around 20–30 minutes by boat, and how well their dive and excursion teams manage the experience.
