Soneva Fushi vs Soneva Jani: Which One Is Right for You?
Soneva Fushi or Soneva Jani? A candid comparison of reef access, transfers, food, vibe, and which one suits different types of traveller.
They share a brand, a philosophy, and a price point. But Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani are different resorts for different travellers, and choosing the wrong one is a genuinely expensive mistake.
The headline difference
Soneva Fushi has one of the finest house reefs in the Maldives, directly accessible from the beach, with turtles, reef sharks, and dolphins encountered on most outings. Snorkelling here is a daily ritual, not an organised excursion.
Soneva Jani has no walkable house reef. The resort is built on an enormous shallow lagoon, and snorkelling requires a paid boat trip, approximately $140 per person, to the outer reef. The lagoon has some marine life visible from villa decks, but it is not a snorkelling destination.
This single fact should determine your choice if the underwater world is a significant part of why you're going.
Soneva Fushi
Located in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi is set on a densely vegetated island that feels closer to a jungle than a resort. The vibe is barefoot, unhurried, and genuinely extraordinary in its attention to the natural environment.
Nine restaurants range from a treetop dining experience to a fresh seafood grill on the beach. An on-site observatory with a resident astronomer, a glass-blowing studio, a chocolate and ice cream-making room, and a cinema on the beach make this one of the most activity-rich ultra-luxury resorts in the Maldives.
The house reef is a short walk from any villa. Multiple entry points, turtles almost every day, reef sharks regularly, and the broader Baa Atoll reef system, including Hanifaru Bay for manta rays, accessible by short boat trip.

Best for: Couples and families who want the reef experience to be effortless and daily. Guests who want exceptional food alongside exceptional snorkelling. Nature enthusiasts. Anyone for whom the ocean is a central part of the experience.
Soneva Jani
Located in Noonu Atoll, Soneva Jani is built almost entirely over water. The overwater villas, including rooms with retractable roofs for star-gazing and slides directly into the lagoon, are among the most architecturally extraordinary in the Maldives.
Nine restaurants match Fushi in number and largely in quality. The overwater cinema, a floating screen on the lagoon, is a genuinely magical experience. The wellness programme is excellent.
The lagoon is calm, beautiful, and enormous. The marine life within it, sharks, stingrays, turtles visible from villa decks, creates an aquarium effect that many guests find captivating. But if you want to actually snorkel among those animals, you'll need to book and pay for a boat trip.
Transfer: 45-minute seaplane. Daylight only.
Best for: Couples who prioritise the overwater architectural experience above all else. Guests who want a resort that feels like an event in itself. Honeymooners for whom the lagoon view from an overwater villa is the primary aspiration. Travellers who are n
