Soneva Jani

Medhufaru · Noonu Atoll

Ultra-Luxury · seaplane · 45 min · $2,500 – $12,000 / night

All-inclusive available

Soneva Jani is renowned for its iconic overwater villas with waterslides, making it a playful yet sophisticated choice for couples and families. This resort excels in providing a feeling of secluded luxury even with its generous number of villas. Indulge in exceptional culinary experiences across nine venues, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Maldives' largest lagoons.

Getting There

A 45-minute seaplane from Malé, roughly the same flight time as Soneva Fushi. Daylight-only operation applies. The flight over Noonu Atoll gives one of the more spectacular aerial views of any Maldives transfer.

Food

The same exceptional food philosophy as Soneva Fushi but scaled to an even more dramatic setting. Multiple dining venues include an overwater restaurant and a cinema dining experience. Organic, sustainable sourcing is embedded in every menu.

The Vibe

The overwater setting creates a natural sense of seclusion even though the resort has more villas than Soneva Fushi. Couples dominate, drawn by the slide-into-the-ocean feature on the overwater villas. The cinema on the lagoon is genuinely magical and sets the tone for the whole place.

Activities

The overwater cinema — a floating screen on the lagoon — is the signature activity. Beyond that, diving, snorkelling, and a full range of water sports are available. The wellness programme is strong and the cinema experience is genuinely magical on a clear night.

The Reef

Soneva Jani sits in an enormous shallow lagoon, which means there is no walkable house reef. Snorkelling requires a boat trip (typically 5 minutes) to the outer reef edge — this is chargeable at around $140 per person and must be booked in advance. The lagoon itself has some marine life — sharks, stingrays and turtles are occasionally spotted from villa decks — but it is not a snorkelling destination. Guests who came primarily to snorkel consistently note disappointment; those who came for the design, food and overwater experience consistently note delight. Choose accordingly.

Kids' Club

Soneva Jani has a kids' club with activities including chocolate and ice cream workshops, supervised water activities, and nature programming — similar to Soneva Fushi's Den. Note that paid activities can be expensive and snorkelling access requires a chargeable boat trip, which may disappoint children expecting to step off the beach into the reef.

What Guests Say

Known for its overwater villas and dramatic settings, Soneva Jani provides the same high culinary standards as its sister property. While the seclusion is a strong draw, its shallow lagoon means a poor house reef, requiring boat excursions for serious snorkeling. The setting emphasizes privacy despite a higher villa count.
